Hey
guys, in this post I will be sharing with you the reasons why you should start
playing Dice Masters. Just a gentle reminder that this is purely my opinion, I
have no dislike for any other games that I will be comparing Dice Masters to.
Anyway
before I start, I just want to let everyone know that this site is based on
Singapore context, players from around the world can still read my posts but it
might not be applicable to you.
What is Dice Masters?
Dice
Masters is simply a game where you are your opponent uses superheroes from the
DC, Marvel or Ninja Turtles universe, or even creatures and characters from Dungeons and Dragon and battle. The first person to bring their opponent’s
life to 0 will be the winner. You will start with 8 non-superhero (known as
sidekicks) dice and throughout the game, you will buy characters and hopefully
you are able to use them. I will be posting an article on how to play the game
so don’t worry about that.
Cost
I am
going to start on this point, simply because most of us aren’t very wealthy.
Most players are either working adults or youth that are studying, so most of
your money or allowances are spend on your daily necessities, which mean you
don’t much left for other stuff.
But
fear not, because Dice Masters is one of the cheapest board games you can find.
The
starter for example, cost less than $30 or at most $30++, and this includes
everything you need to play the game! Each starter comes with 44 dices, 34
cards, 4 action cards indicator, 2 dice bags and an instruction manual that can
also be your play mat!
If
you are sick of playing the same cards from the starter, you may want expand
your game by buying foil packs. Each pack cost around $1.60 and at most $2, and
comes with 2 cards and 2 dices; I think that is really cheap for a booster
pack!
If
you are not the kind who likes to buy booster packs, then you can buy single
cards and dices from other players. A common card is so common that I can give
you one for free if I have a spare, uncommon cards cost less than $1 (good ones
might be more but no more than $3), rare cards usually cost $5, super rare
prices varies but you don’t need all of them to play the game. Older series are
more expensive though as they are harder to find, but you can definitely build
a good team using only cards from the latest series. Dices are cheap as well,
they usually cost $0.50 and rarer ones $2 at most. So with less than $30, you
can build a competitive team!
It
is not expensive to play the game, it is only costly to complete the collection
in this game, which is not mandatory, but completing a set is not as expensive
as other trading card game, a series of all cards and dices will cost you
around $200-$300, but don’t worry, series are usually released quarterly or tri-annually,
so you are like spending $75-$100 per month, that is if YOU WANT TO COMPLETE A SERIES.
I forget to mention that if you are not a fan of DC, you can skip the DC
series, similarly for non-Marvel fans, dice masters also features Dungeons and
Dragons and Yu-Gi-Oh, so if you are not a fan of these series, you can skip
them as well.
Collection
Now I
will talk about the collection part of the game. Maybe Dice Masters doesn’t
offer fantastic sculpt for like X-wing Miniatures, Heroclix or Warhammer 40K,
but it does offer something unique.
Don’t
forget about the cards! Each card may have the same art but the effect of the
card sure differs in the game. Being able to collect cards AND dices is really
fun and exciting.
You
realized that there are 2 different Emma Frost card in the series, that is
because 1 of them can be obtain from the booster pack and the other can be
obtain by playing events. This makes your collection even more exciting!
Alternate arts can be obtained by playing event, winning an event or simply
buying the collector storage box. Some alternate art have the same text as the
ones in the booster pack, while some has different text, but if you don’t like
the alternate art, you can skip it.
With
so many things to collect, you might think that storage for the items would be
ridiculous right? Well that’s not true, if you are really into the game and a
big fan of dice masters, you can buy the Storage Box, which includes 20 dices
that have different colour from the ones you get in starter, 10 cards, 4 action
cards indicator, 1 alternate art card, 1 fabric dice bag, storage trays for
your dices and cards, and 4 booster foils. Or you can get a storage box from
Japan Home at less than $5! There are many other places that sells storage box,
you can pick them up and store your dices. As for the cards, you can get a $12 card
album to store them or simply get a deck case that cost $5 or less! This isn’t
just for storing; you can also bring your collection around and play with your
friends.
Community
Now
what’s a game without a community filled with people who shares similar
interested in the game. Since Dice Masters is one of the newer games, our community
is really small, we have less than 6 active players, used to have more, many
left, but throughout the years, the community have been really friendly and it’s
really hard to get a community with this many nice people. You have to join us to believe it. Not to forget that in the community, not everyone is a collector, so you can definitely trade or sell off your unwanted stuff to someone who might be interested in them, so if the community grows, there are more people to trade your stuff with!
I
like to give credit where credits are due. We do have shops that have supported
the game despite the number of players that shows up every week. There are days
where we have only 4 people for an event, but still, the event goes on. So we
do have committed shops that are willing to do events for the community, so you
don’t have to worry about the community dying anytime soon.
Every
month has an organised play (OP) event for dice masters. So you will definitely
get a chance to play almost every week. Participation fee for an event is
usually $6, and even if you lose all your games, you get to have 1 booster pack, 1 participation card and 1 lucky draw for the competitive prizes, that is
so much for just $6. Not to forget that if you are really lucky and manage to
win all your games, you get more boosters and the competitive prize! Check out the Dice Masters Singapore Facebook group for the any upcoming event for the game.
Well,
to show you how sincere I am in growing this game; I will offer Tutorial
session to anyone who wants to learn about the game. It’s not free though, you
have to PAY attention. Don’t worry, I really wouldn’t charge you anything for
some tutorial lesson. Just contact me
via Facebook if you want to learn about the game in person, I will let you know
when would be the next tutorial session I am holding, I will be more than happy
to teach you.
Controlled System
Have
you played a game before where that rich kid from a wealthy family or that guy
who have all the cards in the game is always the person winning? Those games
are really broken; I don’t think really fancy a game whereby the winner is always
the one that spends the most in the game. However, in dice masters, using an affordable
team without any rare or super rare cards can actually be as powerful as teams
with rare and super rare cards. Whichever cards that my opponent has, I can buy
them as well. Plus all cards in the game have a counter against them, so no 1
card in the game is invincible.
But
if you are really afraid of all the Super Rare in the series, fear not, because
shops that organized the event will usually prevent super rare from being used
by any players, so you are new to the game, you don’t have to worry about getting
thrashed. Plus, shops will create themed events such as only avengers, x-men,
Justice League, Villains, common cards and etc. can be played, so everyone will have to play
something different from what they usually play.
A
game of cards is usually dependable on a good deck and a good hand, if you have
both; you probably will win the game. However, in a dice masters, the game
really depends on your luck and your skills. You need some tactics to plan a
good team, and then you need the luck to get the rolls you desire, so if your luck
is bad, you need to change your tactics halfway in the game. Your game play will
change in the middle of the game and can even change when you played the second
time with the same team against the same opponent, so that’s the fun part of
the game.
It
really doesn’t matter who is the veteran player on the table, because the game favours
those with good rolls. It gives a beginner as much chance to win as a veteran,
so the game is fair.
Conclusion
I
know I may sound like I just sugar coated the game, so I going to be frank with
you on a few things, Wizkids(producer of the game) does make mistakes on their card, they do delay
some of their sets, they do make some of the rules very confusing and they do
produce a lot of super rare just to make you buy more. Wizkids is after all
another company that create products to sell and make profits, but isn’t every
single game company the same? People
make mistakes too, so don’t expect perfection for this game just yet, but they
do help us by providing the Wizkids events system website that shows the errata
to a card which they had made mistakes, and also answering questions about the
game. I believe you play a game because you like it, and for me, I like this
game so much that I can oversee all their flaws.
After
reading my post, if you still think that you are not financially capable of
buying this game, or if you have other collectibles that is ongoing and you do
not wish to start on any other game, or you simply don’t like this game, that
is perfectly fine, I am not forcing anyone to start this game, neither can I promise
that this game will do very well in the future without any hiccups in between,
but I am just sharing my wonderful experience with you regarding this game. So
hopefully my post helps and I would see more of you joining our community soon.
Thanks for reading!
