How to play Dice Masters Draft well

Welcome viewers, today we will be focusing on a dice masters draft and how to do well in it.

What is a rainbow draft?

For beginners, this format for dice masters might seems very alien to you. Let me summarize it for you, each player will bring 12 packs of dice masters boosters of the same series. In the draft you will only be allowed to use dice and character cards that you pulled from the boosters.

So what is the difference about playing draft and playing sealed?

Sealed – Open 12 booster packs, build a team using only the 24 cards and dices you pulled from the booster.

Draft – Opened 12 booster packs, placed the first 6 on your right, the next 6 on your left and compile all dice in the middle where every player can see. Once every player have opened their packs, you can start drafting, take the 12 cards on your right, pick 1 and pass the remaining to the player on your left, then pick 1 from the set given to you and continue drafting until all players have received 12 cards. Now do the same for the cards on your left, but pass it to the player on your right instead. After all players have 24 cards, collect the dice in the middle, for every character card you have, you take that character’s dice.

You can see that drafting is so much fun because in a sealed format, if you unfortunately pulled 24 different characters, you will only have 1 dice each, so your team will be very weak. In a draft, even if you pulled 24 different characters, you won’t necessary end up getting 24 different characters, and you will have a better chance of having more than 1 dice for every character.

Why should you start playing draft?

Disclaimer: I am not forcing anyone of you to start playing draft, this is just my opinion and I just want to share it with all if you.

Expandable Game
If you are a fan of DC comics and do not wish to get anything from the Marvel set, it is perfectly fine. But why should anyone play a draft that doesn’t have any characters they are interested about? Simply because Dice Masters is expandable; you can build a team consisting of Batman, Baron Zemo, Human Paladin and Morphing Jar. So don’t limit your game if you going to play Dice Masters for constructed format in the future.

When you play a draft, you get to collect cards and dice that might be helpful for you in a constructed format. Since it is a draft, you get to choose which card you want to keep. It is a good way to hunt for useful cards.

It helps your collection
For anyone who intends to collect a full set of a series, you would realize that a feed and a starter wouldn’t be enough for you to collect everything, so playing a draft would definitely help in your collection.

It’s a fair game
If you are new to the game, you probably won’t get all the cards from the old series, and that puts you in a very disadvantage situation in a constructed format. However, in a draft, everyone can only use the card and dice they drafted, so you won’t see cards from any other series than the one you are playing.

How to be good at a draft game?

If you are reading this article, you are probably one of the beginners who have problems playing a draft and you want to stop your losing streak. Don’t worry I am here to help you.

Step 0: Research on the series

It really doesn’t help you in the game if you are drafting on a series you have no clue about. Researching on the series will help you to know what cards to look out for that are very powerful and what cards to expect from your opponent and what cards to be careful of. This way, you get a glimpse on how to build your team and how to counter those strong characters even before the draft session.

Step 1: Think about how to build a team

Once you opened all 12 of your boosters, take a look at your cards and see what kind of team you would expect to build. Most of the time, you will end up building a mid-range team, but if you are able to build an aggressive, control or combo team, go ahead. You may wish to read more about team building on my previous post.

Step 2: Take the Super Rare

If you manage to pull a super rare in your draft, go ahead and pick them, even if they are weak and probably not going to end up in your team.

Let me show you a simple calculation, if you play a draft of 12 booster packs, it will cost you $24, if you win all the games in the event, you will be awarded with maximum 6 boosters packs. Now what are your chances of getting a super rare in those booster packs, you might end up getting nothing good from the 6 booster packs you won. $24 and getting no valuable cards and dices with that money spent isn’t a good feeling. So drafting a super rare is ideal because a super rare is definitely more valuable than all the common and uncommon you drafted, combined.

However, if the winning prize is a limited edition card that you feel that you cannot get it anywhere else and you have to pick a good uncommon or common over the super rare card in the pile of cards that you are drafting, then go ahead and skip that super rare card.

This applies for Rare cards as well, if you see a rare in a set of cards, just draft the rare as it has more value, if there is an uncommon or common that you need and you can give up the rare, then go ahead and skip it.

Step 3: Value of the cards

Once all the rare and super rare have been drafted, everyone will be left with the uncommon and common cards. So which one to choose? A good card should have a good effect that will be so good that no one will want to give it up. Next, look at the cost of the card, any character that have a purchase cost of 3 or below is worth considering in your team. After that, you should look at the number of dice available for that character; it is not really useful for a 2 cost character to have only 1 dice available.

Step 4: Gathering Dice or Character

Once you have drafted a few cards that are either rare or powerful, you should start to draft to either get more dice for a character or find characters suitable for your team.

Step 5: Team building

After you have drafted 24 cards, it is time to build your team. For example in an AOU draft, if you have drafted more avengers, then you can consider using an avengers combo team, if you have no characters with similar synergy, then use a mid-range team with all the characters with good ability.

Now pick 2 actions that is suitable for your team, if you have no low cost character, just take gearing up for your BAC, if you built a control team, take Power bolt, and if you have characters that are aggressive, take relentless, whatever the matter, pick an action that helps you more than your opponent.

Conclusion

Even after reading my article, I cannot guarantee you that you will be the next draft winner, it is still a luck base game, but I can guarantee you that you will not lose very badly against your opponent. It takes practice to be good in a draft, but if you pull a rare or even a super rare, you are consider a winner, and if you enjoy your game for the draft session then you are the ultimate winner!
